This year marks 350 years since the Great Fire of Northampton, with five months of civic events celebrating the town’s resilience and community spirit in the face of adversity.
The fire, which started as a simple house fire in St Mary’s Street near the Castle on 20 September 1675, quickly turned into an inferno, destroying the centre of the town in less than 24 hours.
Despite the devastation, the actions of the townsfolk and local villagers were applauded – people opened up their homes to those who had lost everything in the flames, local nobles sent provisions, and the Committee for the restoration of the town was set up within a week.
As part of the events marking the anniversary, Northampton Filmhouse are bringing you a short season of films that celebrate Community Spirit from the BFI’s Top 100 British Films – Fires Were Started, Local Hero and Brassed Off.
Tickets are just £5 each for Members, and £5.50 each for non-members.
