An overview
Be enthralled by this new army doing their National Service; one that made such an incredible contribution to the war effort at home, but that have, in the intervening decades been all but forgotten. The pioneering Women’s Land Army of the Great War years aimed to recruit women largely from wealthier backgrounds for the first time although this was not always the case! For the many women who worked in mainly towns and cities in well-paid jobs or didn’t work at all prior to the war, they were strongly encouraged to come and work on the land, (often for the first time) in large numbers. 

The speaker:
Helen Frost has a background in teaching and lecturing in English. She is a Great War historian, speaker and author with a particular fascination about the lives of Land Girls during the Great War. She has had articles published in Stand To, the journal of the Western Front Association and other publications. She has a deep love of the countryside and of old traditions and customs passed down the generations and is passionate about remembering the legacy left behind by those that served during the Great War. Her other passions are Baroque music, (George Frederick Handel in particular) cycling, watching cricket and reading about the polar expeditions of Ernest Shackleton.   

This talks starts at 2.00pm and will be approx. 45mins – 1 hour.

If you choose a cream tea or afternoon tea this will be served after the talk. Lunch bookings will be at 12.30pm.

All tickets include parking for the duration of the event and ticket type.
Members, of course, benefit from free parking all day.
