DESCRIPTION:ONLY A FEW SPACES LEFT FOR EACH TIME SLOT Interested in learning more about the history of the town in which we live? Then why not take this opportunity to meander through a time capsule of our town with a guide from Northamptonshire Walks\, in honour of Heritage Open Days! \nStarting and finishing here at the Mill\, there are two start times to choose from – 12.30pm and 2.30pm. This guided walk will take you to places you have might have passed without recognising their significance in the town’s past. Plus\, some of the people who left their imprint within the town\, for example The King of Naples and Sicily and Charles Dickens. There are numerous hidden historical gems here in Towcester and this is your chance to find out more! \nThe walk is along hard surface paths and pavements\, comfortable walking shoes are recommended. This walk will last around 1 1/4 hours. Distance approx 2 miles. \nNumbers are restricted to 20 people per walk. Age 16+ please. Those under 18 must be accompanied by an adult. Those participating do so entirely at your own risk. Please note you must register in order to attend as numbers are limited.

DESCRIPTION:Bronze Age Burials And Ceremonial Landscape \nA heritage talk by Professor Stephen Upex \nThe coming of the Bronze Age heralds major changes in the way that society appears to have operated\, farmed\, buried their dead and worshipped which can all be detected within the archaeological landscape. This talk will review some of these changes and explain how society developed and who was driving these changes. \nSpeaker Bio: \nProfessor Stephen Upex Ph.D.\, MCIfA. FSA. \nProf. Stephen Upex has written papers and books on topics related to British landscape history and archaeology and his interests range from Roman and Saxon landscapes and archaeology to medieval open fields systems. He has directed archaeological excavations on Roman and Saxon sites in the East Midlands and contributed to several Time Team programmes for Channel Four. Recently Stephen has written a series of landscape and archaeological reports and books on sites within the East Midlands and he is currently in the process of publishing a volume on Roman industrial landscapes. His most recent books are the ‘Romans in the Nene valley’ (2022) and ‘Edmund Tyrell Artis and the Durobrivae of Antoninus’ (2023) Stephen is a tutor at the University of Cambridge and also works a freelance archaeologist\, author and consultant. He is a member of the Chartered Institute for Field Archaeologists (MCIfA) and a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries (FSA).

DESCRIPTION:Antiques and Vintage Fair\nSunday 30th & Monday 31st August\, 9am-4pm \nNorthamptonshire's premier antiques\, vintage and collectors fair organised by Stag Head Events return for two weekends this year. \nSpanning two days and featuring over 80 stalls of antiques\, collectables\, furniture\, vintage\, jewellery\, coins\, retro\, militaria\, clocks\, toys\, vinyl\, china\, glass\, radios\, tools\, posters and much more!  \nHoused in the Edwardian stable block and with additional outside stalls\, visitors will find items priced from 50 pence to £5\,000. There really is something for everyone! \nDelicious food and drink available to purchase from Saul's of Spratton and The Stable Yard Cafe.  \nFor more information please see Stags Head Events \nTickets are available to purchase on the day at the entrance (last entry 3pm) \nAdult:  £5 \nUnder 18s:  Free  \nFree onsite car parking. Friendly dogs are welcome on short leads.  \nDisabled parking is available and disabled toilets are available next to the entrance to the Fair. Please note that although the event is held mostly on one level\, there are steps in places and some gravelled and cobbled areas in the stables. There are also gravelled paths (deep gravel in some areas) in the gardens.  \nPlease note most stallholders are able to accept card payments but should you require it the nearest cash machine is in Brixworth village.  \nThe Hall and Gardens will be closed on Sunday. DESCRIPTION:Death Of A Clown – A Solo Performance Drama\nFriday 21st August\, 7:30pm-9:15pm \nDEATH OF A CLOWN – A Solo Performance Drama \n\nThe play lasts approximately 105 minutes including a 15 minute interval. \n\nIt is the year 1600 and one-time theatrical superstar Will Kemp is down on his luck. Reduced to long-distance morris dancing as a publicity stunt\, there's only one person to blame: Will Shakespeare. T'other Will. Our Will wants to tell you about it… \n\nThough we know frustratingly little about our greatest poet and playwright\, we know even less about his pre-eminent comic actor\, the extraordinary Will Kemp. We can glean from existing records that he was the most popular clown of his day\, also that Shakespeare wrote his early comic roles with him in mind (most notably Bottom in A Midsummer Night’s Dream)\, but further references to him are sparse. \n\nAlong with Shakespeare himself\, it is known that he was a sharer (or director) of The Lord Chamberlain’s Men\, who staged all of Shakespeare’s plays and who were the most successful company in London\, and we also know that as a sharer he was an equal amongst equals\, so could not be dismissed. And yet\, in 1599\, he suddenly disappears from the records\, which suggests that he left the company of his own accord. Why he should choose to do so\, seemingly at the height of his powers and popularity\, only to vanish into obscurity (apart from his “nine day’s wonder” in 1600) is a mystery that this play attempts to unravel. \n\nActor/Musician: Robin Hillman\nRobin Hillman\, who plays Will Kemp\, has spent several decades performing as an actor\, fiddle-player and singer. For Theatre 17\, as well as Kemp\, he was John Clare in the one-man show I Am John Clare\, written and directed by the late Stephen Loveless\, performing this acclaimed show many times over the course of several years. He was also William Blake in the one-man show Fearful Symmetry\, The Locksmith in Something Scary\, and also played the title role in Jack Luck. All these plays were written and directed by Stephen Loveless. \n\nWriter/Director: Kevin Buxton\nKevin Buxton has been involved in the worlds of theatre and music for over 40 years\, as a writer\, director\, actor\, musician\, and latterly as a music promoter. Early in his career he ran his own touring revue company before working as a freelance scriptwriter for television. Death Of A Clown marks his return to the theatre after\nmany years\, during which he has focussed primarily on music projects as well as writing fiction. \n\nStaging: Weekes Baptiste\nFormerly the Artistic Director of Northampton Youth Theatre\, Weekes Baptiste has over 40 years of experience in professional theatre both on and off stage. His strength is as a writer/director\, and to date he has written over a dozen original plays for children of all ages and adults\, performed throughout the UK. In 2021\,\nWeekes was awarded a prestigious award for his work and outstanding contribution to youth theatre in Northamptonshire. \n\nThanks to Chris Conway for the music accompanying Shakespeare’s dialogue. \nDoors open at 7pm for a 7:30pm start.
