SUMMARY:The Gothic Library at Stowe: A Reappraisal
DESCRIPTION:George Clarke Prize winner\, Dr Ralph St Clair Wade reconsiders the origins and significance of the Gothic Library at Stowe\, one of the earliest interiors of the Gothic Revival. This talk is one of a lecture series held monthly. \nJoin us as last year’s winner of the George Clarke Prize\, Dr Ralph St Clair Wade\, presents his latest research on the Gothic Library at Stowe. The George Clarke Prize is a biennial award granted by the Hall Bequest Trust for original research into the history\, architecture and landscape of Stowe House. The prize encourages new scholarship based on the estate’s extensive archive of more than 350\,000 papers based at the Huntington Library (California)\, with winners presenting their findings through lectures and publications. \nThe Gothic Library at Stowe House\, Buckinghamshire is a rare survival. Commissioned by the 1st Marquess of Buckingham\, the Library is significant as the only Gothic interior designed by the distinguished classicist Sir John Soane (1753–1837). In itself\, it is one of the earliest interiors of the Gothic Revival. \nBut why the departure from Stowe’s famous classicism? This talk takes a fresh look at the room’s accepted origin story and considers the role of Mary\, Marchioness of Buckingham (1758–1812)\, and her Catholic chaplain\, Charles O’Connor. \nKey Information \nThe event will proceed with a 60-minute talk followed by audience questions\nBooking essential\nYour free ticket includes a welcome drink on arrival at 5.30pm with thanks to the Hall Bequest Trust\nThe talk will start at 6.00pm

SUMMARY:For England and St George - An Evening of English Whisky
DESCRIPTION:Once a year\, founder Laurence Conisbee opens the doors to Wharf Distillery for an evening of English whisky. With a crafted welcome drink in hand\, guests gather as Laurence begins to unravel the tale of Wharf — its quiet beginnings\, its unlikely breakthroughs\, and the philosophy that shaped every drop produced within these walls.\nAs the group moves deeper into the distillery Velocity and Mari come into view — the two stills that have become characters in Wharf’s journey as much as tools of the craft. Laurence guides you through the spaces where ideas were tested\, risks were taken\, and the identity of modern English whisky was forged. \nThe evening unfolds as a conversation rather than a lecture. Laurence shares the nuances of small‑batch production\, the decisions that define English whisky\, and the subtle contrasts that set it apart from its Scotch and international cousins. Guests are invited to taste\, question\, and follow the narrative as it reveals itself — with a few unexpected moments woven in to make this annual gathering feel truly unforgettable. \nWhat’s included\nYour experience begins with a crafted welcome drink\, with an additional five tasting pours presented over the course of the evening\, complemented by an assortment of artisan cheeses and crackers. \nThe distillery bar will remain open after the main event should you wish to stay for further drinks and conversation with Laurence. \nItinerary:\n– Welcome drink\n– The story of Wharf Distillery (2nd taster)\n– Introduction to English Whisky (3rd taster)\n– A tour of our Still Room (4th taster)\n– The English Whisky Revival (5th Taster)\n– Q&A (6th taster) \nHighlights:\nSavour an evening of rare privilege as founder Laurence Conisbee opens the doors to Wharf Distillery for an experience usually reserved for insiders. Guests are welcomed with an impeccably crafted signature serve before being escorted into the distillery’s inner sanctum for a deeply personal exploration of its heritage\, philosophy\, and quietly influential role in English whisky.\nMove through the production spaces as Laurence introduces Velocity and Mari\, the stills that define Wharf’s uncompromising small‑batch artistry. This is a chance to witness the craft at its most authentic: the decisions\, the discipline\, and the quiet innovation that have shaped Wharf’s reputation among those who know. \nThroughout the evening\, guests are invited to engage in conversation\, taste with intention\, and immerse themselves in the nuances that distinguish English whisky on the world stage. This is not simply a tour\, it is an invitation into the distillery’s inner circle\, offered just once a year to those who appreciate craftsmanship at its most refined.

SUMMARY:UNWIND IN THE WOODS: Forest bathing at Salcey
DESCRIPTION:Would you like to tune into nature? Let go of stress? Unwind and relax? \nJoin us for a journey among the beautiful trees of Salcey\, once part of a medieval royal hunting forest\, and still home to ancient oaks. Our sessions are designed to gradually calm body and mind\, with sensory activities carefully chosen to help you move from ‘doing’ to ‘being’ – all while exploring nature’s seasonal highlights. Our guided ‘treelaxation’ will help soothe away stress\, and you’ll leave with tips and tools you can use any time to help give you a mental and physical boost. \nYour guide will be Liz Burfield\, who trained as a forest bathing guide having experienced first-hand the benefits of mindfulness and nature on depression and anxiety. Her sessions are friendly\, down to earth\, and suitable for anyone who enjoys being outdoors.
