Family fun guaranteed!
It can be a challenge to find a destination that offers something of interest to every member of the family, but here in Northamptonshire we’ve got a few brilliant family-friendly and dog-friendly solutions.
Rushden Lakes is a modern lakeside venue with big name shops, entertainment and eateries all in one well-laid out location. Look out for the dog friendly stickers for many of the shops on site. Activities include indoor climbing and trampolining, soft play for the little ones — there’s even a cinema! One of the gateways to the Nene Wetlands, there are walking trails and cycle routes, as well the water-based activities.
A short drive away, Stanwick Lakes is a unique 750-acre countryside attraction and nature reserve. It boasts extensive and imaginative play areas, open spaces and paths that families, walkers, cyclists and nature lovers can explore. There’s a visitor centre, with café, shop and function space where craft workshops are often staged. The visitor centre is also dog friendly!
The Chester House Estate
The Chester House Estate is a nationally significant heritage site, being one of the few places in the country which can demonstrate over 10,000 years of human activity. With a beautiful farmyard on site, enjoy artisan shopping at it's best!
The site is dog friendly, with lots of areas for dogs to enjoy and a selection of walks around the site to explore 10,000 years of history with your furry friends. The team do ask that you keep your dogs on leads at all times whilst on site. Indoor seating is available within the Farmhouse Kitchen where you can sit inside with your dogs.
Castle Ashby Gardens
Although the focus of any visit to Castle Ashby Gardens should be its beautiful gardens, there’s plenty to keep children entertained too, including a menagerie with pigs, rabbits, monkeys and meerkats. Set in the heart of a 10,000-acre estate, the gardens were designed by Capability Brown and you can wander through the romantic Italian Gardens, a unique orangery and impressive arboretum. Don’t miss the plant centre, tea room and gift shop! Dogs are permitted into the Gardens providing that they are walked on a lead in all areas of the formal gardens. They can run free in the Arboretum.
Nene Valley Railway
Lovingly restored heritage steam trains await to take you on a fun journey at Nene Valley Railway. Learn all about the railway’s history at the Wansford station then take a ride through the picturesque surroundings to Peterborough’s Nene Park, the next destination of recommended family-friendly days out.
Nene Park is a large area of park land to the west of Peterborough and is the region's favourite place to get outdoors and enjoy nature. It is made up of six different areas: , , , , and made up of parkland, meadows, woodlands and lakes. The River Nene runs through all the areas connecting them together.
