What is Northamptonshire Day?

Every October, the heart of the county comes alive with pride, celebration, and community spirit as we mark Northamptonshire Day — but what exactly is it, and how did it begin?...

The Origins

Northamptonshire Day was created to shine a spotlight on everything that makes the county special — from its rich heritage and world-class shoemaking to its stunning countryside and vibrant communities.

The date, 25 October, was chosen to coincide with St Crispin’s Day, the patron saint of shoemakers — a nod to Northampton’s historic role as the UK’s shoemaking capital.

Saint Crispin's Day is a feast day in honor of Saint Crispin and Saint Crispinian, who were twin brothers and Christian martyrs. They are the patron saints of cobblers, leather workers, and shoemakers.

The day is famously associated with the Battle of Agincourt in 1415, where King Henry V of England delivered his legendary “St Crispin’s Day” speech, immortalized by Shakespeare in Henry V. The speech celebrates camaraderie and bravery, making the day symbolic of pride, craftsmanship, and resilience.

How it has evolved

What started as a simple idea to celebrate local identity has grown into a county-wide celebration with events, activities, and community involvement across Northamptonshire. From trails and local food producers, to live music and cultural performances, Northamptonshire Day has become a true showcase of everything the county has to offer.

In 2025, a large-scale celebration is being held on Northampton Market Square featuring 'zones' to reflect the county's strengths:

  • Heritage Zone
  • Family Zone
  • Culture Zone
  • Food and Drink Zone
  • Community Zone
  • Vulcan Creatives Zone
  • Main Stage
