Discover the Story Behind The Chester House Estate
To celebrate English Tourism Week, member of the Discover Northamptonshire Team, Evie, has been catching up with some of Northamptonshire’s most loved destinations!
In this blog, she’s been speaking with Alex from The Chester House Estate, and discussing what makes this such a great place to visit!
Evie: Alex, how did The Chester House Estate begin, and what inspired its development?
Alex: The estate’s modern story began in 2004, when Northamptonshire County Council purchased the historic site — then known as Chester Farm — with the goal of preserving its extraordinary archaeology and opening it up for public enjoyment. Thanks to major support from the National Lottery Heritage Fund and partners, the site underwent a huge restoration and transformation project before opening to visitors in October 2021.
The inspiration behind it all is the sheer depth of history here. We have evidence of over 10,000 years of human activity on this land, from prehistoric settlements to a Roman town field. It’s a truly unique heritage landscape.
Evie: Wow - so much history! What does Chester House offer visitors today?
Alex: We’re a free‑to‑enter heritage destination with something for everyone. Visitors can explore our museum and archaeological experiences, enjoy learning programmes, book event and wedding spaces, relax in our cosy Farmhouse café, and make the most of our family play areas, footpaths and natural landscape.
We also host a huge range of seasonal events — from community favourites to large‑scale celebrations — that bring people together throughout the year.
Evie: Sounds like there's lots of activities to choose from when visiting. Is that what makes you so unique?
Alex: Definitely. We have a combination of heritage, learning and community experiences all in one place. You can walk through a landscape shaped by thousands of years of human history, explore a fully restored farmhouse, and enjoy modern visitor facilities — all within the same visit. There aren’t many places where you can experience that breadth of history so tangibly.
Evie: You recently celebrated a milestone. Tell us about that.
Alex: We marked our 4th anniversary in October 2025, which was a really meaningful moment for us. As part of the celebrations, we published our Impact Report, reflecting on how far we’ve come since opening. It allowed us to celebrate our achievements and look ahead, with a governance review now underway to ensure we’re operating as effectively as possible for the long term..
Evie: I imagine celebrating an anniversary was the perfect chance to kickstart some exciting activity for 2026?
Alex: Absolutely — it’s set to be our biggest year yet! Two highlights stand out:
1. The Irchester Field School Dig Run in partnership with the University of Leicester, this archaeological dig brings together experts from across the UK and beyond. Previous finds span from the Mesolithic period to the Romans — all discovered right here on the estate.
2. The brand‑new Roseshire Festival Taking place over the August Bank Holiday (25–26 August 2026), this new summer music festival will feature acts like The Charlatans, Embrace, Cast, Boyzlife, Eternal and The Hoosiers. We’re thrilled to host a festival rooted in Northamptonshire’s identity as the “Rose of the Shires.”
Evie: Tell me more about the link there with archaeological digs.
Alex: Most people don’t realise just how historically significant the site is. Beneath the fields and pathways lies a rich archaeological story — from prehistoric settlements to a Roman town and medieval farming. When visitors learn this, their reaction is always wonderful.
Evie: How exciting! I bet it's hard to pick a favourite spot onsite with so many stories around every corner...
Alex: You're right. If I had to choose, though, the driveway leading down to the main house feels like the gateway to something special — with the ARC on one side, rolling fields on the other, and the beautiful 17th‑century Threshing Barn and Farmhouse ahead. Whether it’s families arriving for events, school groups heading to the play park, or visitors discovering us for the first time, it’s a place full of memories and anticipation. And the sunsets along the treeline are stunning.
Evie: I bet the site looks stunning with blue skies and sunny weather.
Alex: The estate truly comes alive in the sunshine and with the sun starting to make an appearance we're looking forward to welcoming even more people to the estate!
We’re free to enter, with free parking, accessible facilities and a location that’s easy to reach from the A45.
