About Northampton Town Football Club
Northampton Town Football Club, nicknamed the Cobblers, a reference to the town’s historical shoe-making industry, were founded on 9th March 1897, when a group of local school teachers got together with the well known local solicitor, AJ “Pat” Darnell in the Princess Royal Inn, Wellingborough Road, Northampton to form the town’s first professional football club. The Cobblers play in EFL League One, the third tier of the English football league system in the traditional kit colours of claret and white. Sixfields has a capacity of 8,203, has been home to the club since 1994 and has been expanded in recent years following the construction of the LCS Stand.
A number of teams play under the club’s name. As well as the men’s first team, the club have a successful Northampton Town Women’s team and a thriving academy. The club is also well known for its far reaching community work supporting the population of Northamptonshire and beyond and received the European wide More Than Football Award for its Tackling Loneliness project during the Covid 19 pandemic.
