You might not expect to find Grade One listed monuments is a local village Church. The Montagu Monuments were commissioned to commemorate key members of the Montagu family, ancestors of the Buccleuch family. Sculpted from fine marble, the monuments were positioned in four recesses in a purpose-built chancel within the church. Today, they are highly important pieces of Britain’s social and artistic history.
