Rugby Fever Boosts Northamptonshire’s Hospitality Scene
Northamptonshire has been buzzing with excitement as the Women’s Rugby World Cup lands in Northampton, bringing not just world-class sport but a wave of economic and cultural benefits to the region.
With Franklin’s Gardens hosting thrilling matches and thousands of fans pouring in to cheer on their teams, local hotels, restaurants, and businesses have seen a welcome surge in activity.
The Local Visitor Economy Partnership (LVEP), Discover Northamptonshire, has played a key role in ensuring the county shines on the global stage. Richard Clinton, Chair of the LVEP, said:
“This event has seen brilliant exposure for Northamptonshire as a destination for global sports events. The Women's Rugby World Cup aligns perfectly with our mission to grow the visitor economy and create lasting benefits for local businesses.
Northamptonshire has a proud reputation for both sporting excellence and rich heritage from motorsport at Silverstone to historic estates like Althorp and Delapré Abbey. Events like this not only showcase our world-class venues and hospitality, but also drive footfall to our towns, attractions, and high streets.
By welcoming international teams and fans, we’re supporting local jobs, encouraging repeat visits, and strengthening the county’s profile as a place to stay, explore, and invest in. It’s a fantastic example of how sport and tourism can work hand-in-hand to boost the local economy.”
Andrew Hollett, Chair of the Northamptonshire Hotelier’s Forum, shared his enthusiasm: “I am happy to say that the Women's Rugby World Cup has been a real boost to us all in the county. Culturally, hosting the world’s top women’s teams has been a real treat - our staff and communities have enjoyed welcoming visitors from across the globe, and for some players it’s even been their very first visit to the UK. We’ve had fun sharing simple things - like explaining what porridge is at breakfast! Overall, there has been a real positive vibe around the hotels.”
Whittlebury Park has been one of the hotels hosting international teams. Marc Webster, Commercial Director, shared: “We were honoured to be chosen to provide a supportive and professional environment for these high-calibre athletes in the lead-up to one of rugby’s most prestigious events. Our dedicated staff and outstanding amenities, from tailored spa recovery treatments to top-level fitness spaces, are all geared towards offering a seamless experience for any team focused on excellence.”
James Simpson, general manager at Mercure Northampton, said: “With two squads staying with us, as well as commentary teams and tournament officials, World Cup fever has certainly hit the hotel. It’s been a busy but brilliant few weeks, with excitement building among both staff and guests.
“Looking after sports teams is always a challenge that our team enjoys. The specific nutritional requirements, as well as having to provide athletes with up to five meals every day, is something that keeps the kitchen on its toes and this tournament has given us an incredible insight into elite female sport.
“We’ve enjoyed seeing the town come alive with Fanzones and special events. There has certainly been a buzz around the Market Square and we have actively encouraged guests to get involved and join the party!"
Beyond the matches and the medals, the Women’s Rugby World Cup has left a lasting legacy in Northamptonshire, one of community pride, cultural exchange, and economic uplift. As the tournament continues, the county stands united in celebration, showing the world what Northamptonshire has to offer.
